The conversation kicked off with a personal introduction to both gentlemen. For instance, Steven talked about the time he grew up in Africa which was an important foundation for Triple Jump. The combination of Steven and Jan Lodewijk was also interesting in that their organisations are quite diverse. This immediately highlighted this diverse nature within the sector.
The students' questions came up quickly and the CEOs went into everything in detail. Questions about their personal choices but also about choices made when it comes to investments.
Several questions were also asked about what background you need to have as a student to work at an asset management organisation. Jan Lodewijk and Steven were clear about that. Character and personal baggage are most important. Your studies are a good foundation and the practice is that the diversity in studies as an entry point to asset management is huge.
Make sure you make your own choices and keep an eye on your own 'sales'. Would you like to work in the Netherlands or internationally? That can already be a basis for the company you apply to. And above all, engage in conversation. By responding to a concrete vacancy or by simply getting in touch. Jeroen also highlighted the website assetmanagement-careers.nl where, in addition to general information for students about the sector, the right entry points to career opportunities at various affiliated members are listed.
Time flew by and all the questions and answers were listened to with full attention. During the drinks afterwards, the discussions therefore continued in full swing. The CEOs stayed until the end and were able to answer many questions. It was another interesting and fun afternoon for them too.
