The session began with questions about Ronald and Erik’s childhood dreams. Ronald shared that he wanted to be an astronaut as a child, to which Erik encouraged him to keep that dream alive. Erik himself had always dreamed of becoming a farmer and hopes to spend more time on his farm in the future, alongside his work at Van Lanschot Kempen.
Interest in the asset management sector was strong; many students eagerly raised their hands when asked who aspired to a career in the field. They posed a range of questions on topics like building diversified portfolios for pension funds, as done at APG, and for high-net-worth clients, as seen at Van Lanschot Kempen. Current issues were also discussed, such as balancing investments in sustainable projects and fossil fuels. Ronald and Erik noted that their organizations are on the right path but that there is always room for improvement — a process where the younger generation can play a crucial role.
Beyond traditional investment strategies, students wanted to know if the companies were already working with crypto. The CEOs explained that, while they are monitoring developments, crypto currently does not fit within their risk-diversified, long-term strategy. As for artificial intelligence, they were optimistic about the possibilities but also highlighted the risks. For the new generation of asset managers, there is a challenge to use AI responsibly.
The central location within the faculty attracted some passersby to the event. In addition to the 60 seated attendees, around 85 students in total were listening attentively at the peak of the session. The student questions brought a fresh and energetic atmosphere. Next week, Klaas Knot from the Dutch Central Bank will be interviewed on the same stage, and the CEOs could already suggest some sharp questions for the students to consider.
Afterward, conversations continued at Café de Krater, where Ronald and Erik answered more questions. Both the students and the CEOs found it to be an afternoon filled with inspiring insights. With this successful kickoff, the College Tour promises an exciting series where students can dive deep into the world of asset management.
